From this series of recorded conversations between Mike Fry and Dr. Poczwardowski, you will learn the seven basic mental skills that can be used to enhance your mental toughness. In addition, Disk Eight will look at your athletic career from a long-term perspective that emphasizes optimal growth and development. Our goal is to offer you a starting point for your progress towards building fundamentals of mental preparation. More specifically, Disc One: Self-Regulation - will focus on how to regulate the amount of physical and mental energy that you feel. A number relaxing and energizing techniques will be described in detail. For example, you will be encouraged to use music for both calming down and psyching up. Disc Two: Self-Imagery - will familiarize you with some major imagery uses for practice and competition. The importance of utilizing numerous senses (not just vision) will be stressed and illustrated. For instance, imaging the bodily feeling of the throw motion will better prepare you for the performance that follows. Disc Three: Self-Concentration - will identify major problems in staying focused. Additionally, numerous concentration enhancing techniques will be thoroughly discussed. Practice with situational distractions might be a very effective way to train you concentration skills. Disc Four: Self-Talk - will attempt to teach you how to be aware of your thinking processes and how to replace negative thoughts with positive instructions. Disc Five: Self-Confidence - will familiarize you with a few confidence strengthening techniques. Mental programming (based on your skill of self-imagery) is an example of a mental strategy to prepare for competitions. Disc Six: Self-Motivation - will narrow down motivational techniques to those that can add to your intrinsic motivation, one that comes from within you. Clarifying your dream, mission, and goals will be discussed. Disc Seven: Self-Preparation - will teach you about developing mental plans (prior to your competition) and pre-event routines (prior your performance). You will find out how using mental plans will reduce randomness in your preparation and, as a result, will add to your competitive edge. Disc Eight: Self-Development - will encourage you, your parents, and your coaches to approach your sport participation from a long-term perspective. The importance of this developmental philosophy rests on planning the entire athletic career, introducing balance into athletic and personal life, and improving psychological well being. |
